The Berlin Wall Foundation, according to the law passed on September 17th 2008, was built as a foundation with legal capacity. The foundation will merge the Berlin Wall Memorial in the Bernauer Straße and the Memorial "Notaufnahmelager Marienfelde", while both institutions will keep their respective names.

The intention of the foundation is to present the history of the Berlin Wall and the escapes from the German Democratic Republic as a part and consequence of the German division and the Cold War of the 20th century and further to preserve historic sites, authentic traces and the remembrance of the victims of communist dictatorship.

The establishment of the Berlin Wall Foundation is an important step to implement the foundation-concept of the Senate of Berlin and the "Bund" and the expansion of the Berlin Wall Memorial.
